This course examines how civil society interacts with the state and market in order to affect positively the social capital. After reviewing critically different theoretical and conceptual frameworks and paradigms of civil society, the course explores the various topics of civil society from political, economic and social capital perspectives. Topics include: civil society and democracy, civil society and welfare states, civil society and development, civil society and social capital and the role of civil society in conflict zones. Different comparative cases are discussed from the developed world as well as from developing perspectives. The students will also be assigned different assignments and research papers that tackle the critical issue of development and its sustainability from civil society and the NGOs perspectives. Different case studies will be given in this directional focus.
