This course focuses on the peaceful means of resolving disputes of an international nature by shedding light on the drafting of the United Nations Charter for the achievement of international peace and security. The course begins with giving a historical overview related to dispute settlement methods up to Chapter VI of the United Nations Charter and discussing in detail the peaceful methods for resolving disputes included in this chapter and delving deeper into them, namely negotiations, investigation, mediation, conciliation, arbitration, judicial means, and resort to regional agencies. The course also aims to shed light on the International Court of Justice as a judicial means to settle disputes between states based on the rules of general international law in terms of its composition, the nature of its competencies, the types of judicial rulings issued by it, and what distinguishes each of these types.
