The AAUP Theater Team Concludes its Participation in the International Monodrama Festival in Tunisia

Monday, May 13, 2024

The Arab American University Theater Team has concluded its participation in the International Monodrama Festival in the city of Sidi Bouzid in Tunisia. The team participated in the theatrical performance titled “The Last Sunset,” and the festival had the slogan “Student Letters to Dignified Gaza,” which aims to shed light on deep humanitarian issues and encouraging dialogue and cultural interaction.

Louay Tafish, an employee in the Deanship of Student Affairs at the Arab American University, stated that the theatrical performance “The Last Sunset,” which was produced in cooperation with our partners in the Freedom Theater, is an artistic work that embodies the internal and external conflict facing the Palestinian people under the siege and occupation. The performance also reflects the experience of a character of a young Palestinian woman, living in oppression and persecution, and seeking to build her own world of hope and imagination.

He explained that the events deal with different stages of the young woman’s life, starting with the quiet period before the outbreak of war, when she dreamed of a better future and imagined a world free of restrictions and sieges. With the outbreak of war, her life changes dramatically, and the challenges and suffering facing her increase. This makes her live in a broken world that never allows her to imagine. He also pointed out that the events simulate many of the situations and experiences that the Palestinian people go through daily, such as the Israeli occupation and economic blockade to international marginalization and neglect. Through the young woman’s journey, we see how she defies harsh conditions with her solid will and steadfast resistance.

He clarified that the message of the show, “The Last Sunset,” was to shed light on the issues of justice and humanity facing the Palestinian people, and to convey their voice and suffering to the world. It also bravely and honestly addressed sensitive topics, such as war, occupation, and persecution, without fear or hesitation.  Mr. Tafish noted that the theatrical show raised many feelings. It also raises questions about the political and social reality in the region, and prompts us to think about innovative solutions to these complex issues. By portraying a unique Palestinian experience, the show opens the door to a deeper understanding of the Palestinian reality and the challenges that the Palestinian people face every day.

For his part, the Dean of Student Affairs at the Arab American University, Dr. Fadi Jumaa, explained that the artistic message of the theatrical performance “The Last Sunset” evokes the experience of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, where this land lives under siege and ongoing conflict. This influential artistic journey embodied a story of a Palestinian young woman who overcomes challenges and derives her strength from her belief in freedom and justice. With every performance, a new message is launched calling for solidarity and unity in the face of injustice and oppression. I believe that the Arab American University’s participation in this festival is an important step towards enhancing cultural understanding and solidarity among peoples, and promoting the message of Palestine to the world in an innovative and influential artistic style.
