Molecular Genetics and Genetic Toxicology Laboratories in AAUP

In a recent survey study done by the poll center in Arab American University and after a field survey to try to know the rate of people who were infected by COVID-19, it was concluded that the Palestinian people are far from the herd immunity. The rate of the Palestinian people in the West Bank who are actually holding antibodies to the virus is less than 0.5%.

Researchers took over 1335 random samples from Palestinians living in the different cities of the West Bank who agreed to be part of the study. The samples were laboratory tested to find out if there are any COVID-19 antibodies in the participants’ blood.

Results showed that only 0.5% of Palestinian people have antibodies of the virus and concluded that the Palestinian people are far away from the “herd immunity” and is still susceptible to be infected with the virus.

Prof. Atef Qasrawi

According to the recent announcement in ResearchGate, Prof. Atef Qasrawi- an AAUP Professor and Researcher in Physics and Nanotechnology was ranked amongst 2.5% best researchers for 2019 in the Scientists and Researchers list that contains almost 17 million scientists and graduate students from all over the world.

Prof. Atef Qasrawi, who is also a member of the Higher Council for Innovation and Excellence since 2013, said that “It is an honor for me to reach this level after the hard work and effort, especially with all the support from Arab American University, and I have been ranked previously top 5% between 5 million scientists and researchers in 2017.”

Prof. Qasrawi indicated that the ResearchGate assess the “ISI” publications in its evaluation, which are accredited by the international institution of Clarivate and Thomson Reuters for Statistics and Scientific Research.

Trying to discover the genetic mutations for COVID-19 in Palestine

Under supervision of Academic staff from AAUP, AAUP Masters’ students of the Molecular Genetics and Genetic Toxicology Program and experts from the Ministry of Health, Arab American University in partnership with the Palestinian Ministry of Health launched a research project to study the genetic sequencing for COVID-19 between the Palestinian patients.

This research will provide new visions about the factors behind the development of the virus and how to follow-up the changes in the virus in our country. In addition, this research will provide answers to many questions about the virus that will help specialists and the authority to determine future mechanisms to deal with the virus and help to contain it in Palestine.

The COVENT Ventilator

Directed by Dr. Yousef Asfour- the Head of the Board of Directors, Arab American University contributed in supporting the “COVENT Ventilator” project that is considered to be the first of its kind in Palestine.

This device is used for emergency cases only and has safety features that guarantee safe ventilation process with no complications. It is an electromechanical device with electromechanical parts, and the main part of it is the DC Motor that is connected to the device through an Oxygen Intake Cylinder Module that helps in the vital breathing process of inspiration and expiration.

A study by Arab American University: 93% Confidence that Palestine will be able to Win its Battle against the Coronavirus

In a recent survey study done by the Arab American University on a random sample of 1700 Palestinian of 18 years old and older who were randomly selected and contacted through the phone between April 19th, 2020 and May 1st, 2020, information were collected for a survey on the knowledge and practices concerning the Coronavirus in the West Bank and Gaza. This study that was supervised by Dr.

Study results showed that 88% of the sample (85% in the West Bank and 92% in Gaza) thinks that currently there is no available effective treatment for COVID-19, and 41% of the sample thinks that the warm weather will stop the spread of the disease. Whereas 89% of the sample (92% females and 86% males) thought that this disease is now under control.

About the confidence of people that Palestine can and will win the battle against COVID-19, the study showed that 93% (91% in the WB and 96% in Gaza) trust that Palestine will win.

AAUP was represented by both Prof. Aysar Sussan who presented a paper entitled “Challenges Facing e-learning; as an Important Trend in Globalizing Education” and Dr. Sharif AbuKarsh who presented a paper about “The New Era of the Financial Technology in the Banking Sector”.

AAUP Organizes a Lecture Entitled " Arab Islamic Medicine: between Traditions and Scientific Research "

The Faculty of Sciences in AAUP has organized a lecture entitled “Arab Islamic Medicine: between Traditions and Scientific Research” and hosted Dr.Bashar Sa’d – a Researcher in Biology and member of the Faculty of Sciences staff. The lecture was attended by Deans, Head of Departments and university students.

Dr. Seba Shank – the Dean of the Faculty of Sciences started the lecture by welcoming the audience and explaining that this lecture is one of the series lectures that will be organized by the scientific committee of the faculty. Those lectures enhance the scientific relations between other departments and faculties in the university. Dr. Shanak also introduced Dr. Bashar Sa’d indicating that he was one of the first staff who joined AAUP, he has many scientific researches and hold the degree of professorship.

AAUP Launches a Platform for Digital Research " Scientific Research Digital Repository "

AAUP held a workshop for launching "D space" digital repository for scientific research and digital content for its faculty members, researchers, students and interested community members.

AAUP President Assistant for IT Mr. Bahjat Issa opened the workshop assuring the importance of such digital platforms in the university and other Palestinian universities. which will be a milestone for creating a national digital repository that includes all academic and research institutions nationwide. He pointed out that digital repository is a sign of the openness to all societies, and provides access to digital information and data for all beneficiaries of the university, the local community and the world. As a return this serves the process of education and scientific research.
