The University Participates in a School Visit to the Higher School of Technology at the Canadian University of Quebec

Thursday, September 22, 2022

The Head of the Data Science Department at the Arab American University, Dr. Ahmad Hasasneh, made a two-month scientific research visit to the Higher School of Technology (ETS) at the University of Quebec in Canada, funded by the Palestinian-Quebec Science Bridge, which is supervised by the Palestine Academy of Science and Technology (PALAST).

Regarding the research visit, Dr. Hasasneh confirmed that it dealt with the preparation of a research proposal that will be jointly implemented by the Arab American University and the University of Quebec in Montreal, Canada, on developing a system based on diagnosing infant crying in order to early identify the diseases they suffer from, based on advanced machine learning algorithms. , and use the built-in features of vocal crying signals.

He added that the visit included the preparation of a joint research paper focusing on distinguishing between septicemia and respiratory distress syndrome in newly-born infants, based on various machine learning algorithms. The study is based on extracting and engineering different features from multiple sound fields of infant crying signals and integrating them in the best way to improve the process of linear separation between the two diseases.

Dr. Hasasneh explained that the study achieved promising classification results that confirm the possibility of developing an accurate diagnostic system that works to determine the type of disease that new-born infants may suffer from in the early stages, which in turn preserves their lives.

He also indicated that the visit included direct supervision of a group of doctoral students who work within the team of the Canadian partner researchers in the same field, relying on deep machine learning algorithms. The meetings with students focused on providing a detailed explanation of deep learning methodologies and discussing the possibility of using these methodologies in the field of treatment and analysis of new-born infants’ crying signals in the future.

Dr. Hasasneh pointed out that many Canadian researchers have expressed their desire and interest in working in the future to present additional joint projects, the most important of which is the development of an automatic system for measuring blood pressure based on deep learning algorithms and using signals extracted from the Cuff Deflation Curve within the Palestinian-Quebec Science Bridge. It is expected that it will opened new research channels in the future between the Arab American University and the High School of Technology at the University of Quebec.
