Pre-Requisites : 060512730

This course aims to provide an introduction of medical genetics. The history and development of genetics, structure and function of genes, chromosomes and their anomalies, patterns of single gene inheretance, polygenic and multifactorial and mitocondrial disorders with representative examples. The principles of cytogenetics, chromosomal variations and rearrangements and their consequent genetic disorders will be covered. Clinical genetics, molecular genetics, epigenetics and cancer genetics and carcinogesis will be introduced. Students will be trained to gain practical knowledge of the principles of molecular genetics and cytogenetic techniques used for diagnosis of human genetic disorders; the basics of polymerase chain reaction (PCR), PCR based techniques, DNA sequencing, in addition to the basics of chromosomal preparation and karyotyping
