This course is an introduction to theory and practices of lean management. Topics covered include the history and development of lean production, standardized work, elimination of waste, defining and measuring work and the Japanese concepts of Kanban, Jidoka, Kaizen and Hoshin planning. Special emphasis will be placed on the impact of leadership and management on creating and maintaining a lean culture. The objective of this course is to provide students with knowledge of lean management strategies that will allow them to involve their employees in creating a lean organization. Students will examine companies in different sectors and countries that have implemented lean management and evaluate the impact of the transformation. They will learn strategies that will allow them to quantify and improve quality by implementing and maintaining systems of continuous improvement.
