Basic Techniques in Diagnostic Molecular Genetics: A 4-Day Theoretical-Practical Course

Course Details: 4 Days, 18/12/2022 to 21/12/2022

Day 1:

• Introduction to genetic material: The introductory part will explain the biology, chemistry, and physics of the genetic material and the importance of this basic understanding in molecular biology applications conducted on genetic material.
• DNA extraction: Trainees will perform DNA extraction from different samples.

Day 2:

• Basic principles in Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and its applications: Trainees will learn about the basics of PCR reaction and the effect of different factors on the success of PCR. Also, they will learn about the principles in DNA separation by gel electrophoresis.

Day 3:

• Using PCR based techniques in genetic diagnosis: This session will introduce Amplification Refractory Mutation System (ARMS) and Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) PCRs. In addition, trainees will practice these techniques on real samples and learn how to interpret the results obtained from these techniques.

Day 4:

• Principles and applications of Real-time PCR: Trainees will learn about the different detection chemistries used in Real-time PCR (qPCR) and its use in molecular genetics diagnosis. This session will be divided into theoretical and practical parts.
