Overview

Medical Surgical Nursing is a field of nursing designed to address the need for professional care of adult patients in a variety of settings by combining technical expertise in administering healthcare, and management skills to practice family-centered nursing care. The core of this specialty lies in producing well-educated, knowledgeable, and efficient nurses deeply committed to taking care of patients suffering from surgical and internal issues. It meant to train students in both theoretical aspects of nursing and the practical skills required in caring for patients that may hail from a wide range of age groups, socio-economic backgrounds, etc. According to AMSN (2014), the specialty of medical-surgical nursing takes place in almost every care area because medical-surgical nursing is what you practice, not where.

Therefore, the AAUP proposes a master program in medical surgical nursing to train proficient, knowledgeable, committed, ethically aware, and responsible nurses who apply tenets of critical thinking and evidence-based nursing practice to help the clients in hospitals, health centers, clinics, and rehabilitation center. This program is also expected to broaden graduates’ career and help them establish close affiliations with clinical centers and hospitals. Finally, graduating from a fully accredited nursing university will qualify the graduates to begin work on a medical-surgical floor, and open the path for many administrative and academic positions’ prospects.

 

Goals

  • Synthesize advanced knowledge in medical surgical nursing to provide high quality of care provided to healthy and high-risk patient in different care setting.
  • Improve student's knowledge, skills, attitudes and clinical reasoning skills necessary for the advancement of patient centered care in hospitals and community settings.
  • Equip students with advanced clinical skills and evidence based practices necessary to improve quality care for medical surgical patients at hospital wards.
  • Provide students with tools needed for conducting scientific research, health promotion, disease prevention, and safe medical surgical nursing care.
  • Prepare students to use team work, quality care principles, and effective leadership for the advancement of patient centered care in medical /surgical care settings.
  • Prepare compassionate, legally, and ethically responsive medical surgical nurses who can provide high quality nursing services.
  • Strengthen the student’s abilities to utilize current and emerging healthcare technologies, and information systems in the evaluation of health care services.

 

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME

  1. Integrate advanced knowledge and skills, grounded in the sciences, to interpret diagnostic test data and formulate differential diagnoses and appropriate clinical interventions.
  2. Formulate and execute plan of care based on physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, appropriate health assessment and evidence based guidelines.
  3. Evaluate and manage high risk medical / surgical patient using clinical reasoning and problem solving skills in the provision of holistic and high quality care.
  4. Apply ethical principles pertaining to withholding of clinical care, confidentiality of patient information, informed consent and other clinical practices for the patient will undergo surgical interventions
  5. Advocate for patient and families to provide cost-effective, culturally evidence-based, ethical, quality care in and across health care settings.
  6. Demonstrate effective communications skills, and engage in collaborative intra and inter-professional relationships efforts, to improve adult health care delivery and outcomes.
  7. Exhibit leadership, effective management strategies and exceptional use of information technology resources to ensure proficiency of care at wards, intensive care units or operating theater
  8. Translate research into practice through activities that reflect critical appraisal of existing evidence, development of evidence-based practice, and evaluation of outcomes.
  9. Analyze healthcare data using statistical tools and informatics systems and interpret the results.

Medical- surgical nurses are nurses who work in medical, surgical wards and operating theaters, such as surgical and medical ICUs, with other medical professionals.
