Overview

Perioperative patient safety and anesthetic quality care because national priorities worldwide, which has been progressively stressed throughout the past few decades. Nurses play an important role in the provision of high-quality care to patients undergoing surgery, anesthesia experience, and risk reduction in complications and mortality. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists have been practicing for the past 110 years, and currently deliver more than 65% of anesthetics in the United states. Nurse anesthetist ensures that patients survive surgery without pain and placed their position high on the highest jobs’ lists especially in the United States.

The shortage of nurse anesthetists, and accredited nurse anesthetic programs is growing globally in relation to the increased demand for quality anesthetic services. Students are expected to complete 2-3 years of coursework requirements to include lecture, clinical, simulation, clinical training and residency to complete a master program in nurse anesthesia. Nurse anesthetists can also obtain sub-specialization in pediatrics, plastic surgery, dental, obstetrics, cardiovascular, plastic surgery, or neurosurgical anesthesia.

Palestine witness severe shortage of qualified anesthesia nurses in both private and public sectors. This shortage is expected to be deepened in the midst of increasing number of surgeries, and adequate pain control needs perioperatively. The scarcity of specialized anesthesia nursing staff, as well as unstructured training programs, are challenges to improving perioperative patient care in Palestine.

The Faculty of Nursing at AAUP has contacted hospitals, nursing administrators, and community leaders who showed their full support for the establishment of this master program. This also goes in line with requirements of the Palestinian Ministry of Higher Education which emphasizes the importance of improving quality of education, and the health care services for the Palestinian population.
