Ph.D. in Environment Engineering

Overview

The Faculty of Graduate Studies is a distinguished academic unit that oversees and administers graduate programs, including the “Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering”. The faculty consists of renowned professors, researchers, and experts in environmental engineering, providing students with access to cutting-edge research, mentorship, and a vibrant scholarly community.

The “Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering” program offered by the Faculty of Graduate Studies is a rigorous and advanced research-based program designed to prepare students for leadership roles in academia, industry, and research institutions. This program focuses on interdisciplinary approaches to addressing complex environmental challenges, combining engineering principles with environmental sciences to develop sustainable solutions.

Environmental engineering is a branch of engineering that focuses on applying scientific and engineering principles to address environmental challenges and protect human health and the natural environment. It involves studying and developing technologies, strategies, and solutions to manage and mitigate environmental problems such as pollution, waste management, water resources, air quality, and ecosystem sustainability.

The “Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering” program aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and research capabilities necessary to contribute to the advancement of environmental engineering and address pressing environmental issues. The program emphasizes integrating engineering principles, environmental sciences, and sustainable practices to develop innovative solutions for various environmental challenges.

The program typically spans four to six years. It follows a flexible structured curriculum that allows students to tailor their research and coursework based on their interests and career goals. The curriculum includes advanced coursework in 4 areas such as environmental systems analysis, water and wastewater treatment, air pollution control, sustainable energy, and environmental policy.

The program fosters a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment, encouraging students to collaborate with peers, faculty members, and external stakeholders. Students can participate in research centers, multidisciplinary initiatives, and collaborations with industry partners, allowing them to gain practical experience and broaden their perspectives.

The program's first two years are directed to intensive coursework to train students in the principal methods and materials used in “Environmental Engineering” and its related subfields. After passing the first two years successfully, students are required to develop a doctorate of original research that deals with new insights into past, current, and future developments in Environmental Engineering topics.

Goals

The “Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering” program prepares graduates for academic careers, industry, government, non‐governmental organizations, and independent research. The Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering program's primary objectives include the following:

  1. Offer the program graduates an intensive solid educational foundation through interdisciplinary theoretical and practical application.
  2. Prepare graduates with the critical thinking skills, applications, and tools needed to plan, prepare and generate original and lasting contributions to the bodies of theoretical, critical, and practical knowledge in “Environmental Engineering” and related disciplines and sub‐disciplines that empower graduates to become leaders in research in private and public sectors.
  3. Provide the program graduates with ethics and life-long professional development practice to improve the environment and life standers for current and future generations.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME

The “Ph.D. in Environment Engineering” program is a professional research degree program that enables the students to progress toward their career in academic fields in “Environment Engineering” and its related areas or in government or professional consultation that requires depth in specialization and experience in research. The program “Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) are designed to meet the top accreditation requirements of such programs, and this is represented in the structure and contents of the program courses.

Therefore, upon graduation, graduates of the program of “Ph.D. in Environment Engineering” will be able to:

  • Identify research gaps, develop innovative solutions, and apply advanced methodologies to address complex environmental challenges.
  • Possess expertise in areas such as water and wastewater treatment, air pollution control, solid waste management, environmental impact assessment, and sustainable development.
  • Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, communicate their research findings to diverse audiences, and provide guidance and mentorship to junior researchers.
  • Identify and define environmental problems, evaluate different solutions, and make informed decisions based on scientific evidence and ethical considerations.
  • Conducting their work in an environmentally responsible and sustainable manner, considering the social, economic, and environmental impacts of their research and engineering solutions.
  • Convey complex scientific concepts to technical and non-technical audiences and effectively transfer knowledge.
  • Adapt to new technologies, research methods, and emerging environmental challenges, and actively engage in ongoing education and professional activities.

Careers of Graduates

The program will prepare the program graduates for a variety of positions and careers. Graduates in environmental engineering can pursue diverse career paths in both public and private sectors. They can work for government agencies, environmental consulting firms, research institutions, manufacturing industries, water and wastewater utilities, and non-profit organizations. Roles may include environmental engineer, water resources engineer, air quality specialist, waste management consultant, environmental scientist, sustainability analyst, or environmental policy advisor.

Overall, environmental engineering plays a critical role in finding sustainable solutions to environmental challenges, promoting the protection of natural resources, and improving the quality of life for current and future generations.
