PhD in Information Technology Engineering

Overview

The Ph.D. Program in Information Technology Engineering is a joint program between the Arab American University, Al-Quds University, and Palestine Polytechnic University, which strengthens the partnership between Palestinian universities. The program focuses on integrating engineering methods with various information technology applications, in addition to studying systems Computerization in multidisciplinary research to support a wide range of academic fields. This program targets graduate of master’s programs in disciplines such as informatics, information technology, computer science, computer information systems, computer engineering, and other majors related to information technology engineering. This program aims to qualify and prepare researchers to develop scientific research in the fields of computer and information technology, by creating specialized research teams and groups that provide effective solutions, which provides researchers in this program with an advanced incubating environment to support and develop their research.

 

General Information About the Program

The Ph.D. program in Information Technology Engineering provides a balance among techno­logical, scientific, and social dimensions, that are generally involved in the development and application of information technology.

Degree Title: “Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Information Technology Engineering”

The degree title is well-defined and used around the world to embrace all different computer-related subjects and applied computer science.

Degree Certificate: “PhD in Information Technology Engineering”

Program Duration: At least 3 years.

Required Credit Hours: A total of 54 credit hours CH, course work of 30 CH and a dissertation of 24 CH.

Graduation Requirements: Students must successfully complete the 54 credit hours.

 

Scope of the Dissertation:

The PhD dissertation should be equivalent to 24 credit hours.

  1. The PhD dissertation topic should be agreed upon by a committee selected from the staff.
  2. The student should prepare a proposal for the subject of his/her research dissertation under the supervision of an advisor.
  3. The advisors and the committee monitor the progress of the student in his/her research and finally the student defends his/her dissertation.
  4. The curriculum of the program “PhD in Information Technology Engineering” meets the requirements for doctoral programs in universities in general; this is intentional to provide the market with quality senior experts.

The load of a regular student is 9 credit hours per semester and the minimum duration of the program is three years.

 

The program curriculum includes a set of 5 core courses (15 credit hours) and a dissertation (24 credit hours) that should be taken by all students. These courses are as following:

In addition, students can choose a set of elective courses for the remaining 5 elective courses (15 credit hours) to meet their graduation requirements. These courses should be selected to fit in a concentration of each student. Following is a list of elective courses:

The student continues in registration for the thesis with paying the fees, and regularly attends every semester of the fourth year and what comes after that until successfully discussing his/ her thesis.

 

  • The student can graduate in 3 years with the possibility of continuing for the fourth and fifth years, noting that the student can begin with his PhD Dissertation in the fourth semester (end of the second year).
  • The courses above are distributed to ensure that the student studies at least 9 credit hours of courses hours in each of the partner universities, in addition to the dissertation, which can be jointly supervised.
  • The doctoral dissertation may not be discussed for any student before publishing or receiving acceptance to publish a scientific research of his or her thesis in a classified magazine from Scopus or Clarivate Analytics, as well as attending an organized and specialized scientific conference.
  • Tuition Fees: (350) JD for the credit hours, in addition to registration fees (150) JD for the semester.

 

Goals

  1. Enabling researchers of this program to conduct original scientific research by developing students’ scientific research and innovation skills through advanced research projects.
  2. Enhancing the ability to analyze and design technological and engineering systems and provide innovative technological solutions for significant problems facing the private sector and government institutions.
  3. Providing deep scientific and theoretical knowledge in computer science and information technology engineering.
  4. Preparing scientific staffs specialized in this program to meet the needs of society in terms of research and teaching.
  5. Preparing a joint national program in the field of computer science and information technology engineering, with the participation of three Palestinian universities geographically distributed throughout the country, which contributes to the exchange of academic and research experiences.

Careers of Graduates

Upon obtaining the Ph.D. in Information Technology Engineering, graduates may work in a wide range of fields, including:

  1. Working as a faculty member in higher education institutions.
  2. Work as a specialized researcher in higher education institutions and scientific research and development centers.
  3. Assuming leadership roles in the fields of computer science and information technology in government institutions and private sector companies.
