Master in Arabic Language and Literature

Overview

This program aims to prepare new qualified professionals in Arabic Language in Palestine, as the program will cover the local community needs of academic and professional levels. This degree aims to achieve the researchers’ desire to develop their academic proficiency and bring in the trained and qualified experts to the different organizations that contribute in publishing deep knowledge. This program will keen to follow the scientific approach in developing Arabic language and supplying national institutions, including educational and media institutions, with professional and academic competencies.

 

Goals

This program aims to empower students to understand the concepts and scientific approaches related to the relation between language and culture, and to stress on the importance of culture in enhancing the patriotic project and building a personality that is able to take initiative in the active civil building. The program will also fill the needs of the Palestinian community of the researches and studies needed to build the culture, such as poetry, drama, fiction and the contemporary Palestinian literature by encouraging researchers of students and professors to register their researches in this field.

This program came as a response to the increasing interest in the languages and heritage fields, and to enhance the intellectual originality, and dynamism and objectivity of linguistic research, which we need most at this critical stage in our history. And so there was a need to start a Master in Arabic Language and Literature because language is the root for thoughts and it is a psychological, intellectual and national foundation for societies. Language encourages the civilized participation in the humanitarian efforts that can contribute to the progress, development and advancement of the human being.

Arabic Language and Media Department in Arab American University is considered one of the richest departments in the university, for its academic staff, extracurricular activities, scientific research and relations with the cultural organizations. During the last years, the department has organized many scientific conferences, symposiums, educational days and poetry evenings.

The idea for the Master in Arabic Language and Literature came from three main points:

  1. This program is not available in any of the Arabic universities inside the green line. This program will make it easy for researchers, who wanted to go abroad for their studies and could not, and it would lessen the costs of traveling and staying abroad or even inside Palestine, it will reduce time spent on roads especially under the current circumstances.
  2. This program came as a response to the local community and national and academic organizations’ need for qualified employees who have good knowledge in Arabic language.
  3. The feasibility study showed the importance of this program and encouraged the university to start it.

The program seeks to achieve the following goals:

  • Enrich the Palestinian library with linguistic and literature researches specialized in Arabic language and literature, in addition to media language.
  • Graduate qualified graduates to raise the university education level in Palestine.
  • Meet the growing needs of graduates of the Department of Arabic Language and Media at the Arab American University and other universities to complete their postgraduate studies.
  • Ease the efforts for those who want to complete their education with less efforts and costs of traveling, and provide job opportunities for specialized academics.
  • Show the cultural and literal features of Palestinians.
  • Activate the research process and scientific interaction in Palestine and form a foundation for the cumulative academic building and accelerate the civil participation of Palestinians in world culture.
  • Develop students scientific and research capabilities.
  • Direct postgraduate students to conduct their researches and prepare their thesis to address current issues in Arabic language and literature.
  • Provide the local community with postgraduate programs graduates in Arabic Language and Literature.

Careers of Graduates

The importance of this degree is because the Palestinian labor market suffers from overflowing specialists in BA in Arabic language and literature; however there is a shortage in the numbers of MA degree holders, which is the bridge for students to enter the PhD level that is required in most of the educational and media institutions.

And so, this program fulfills the needs of the labor market of this field.

Graduates of this program can work in many organizations and fields such as:

  • Work in the educational institutions and organizations that have communication relations with audiences, such as: ministries and media organizations.
  • Teachers who want o upgrade their levels and improve their work performance.
  • Employees who work in the governmental and non-governmental sectors.
