Statistics and Data Science

Overview

Due to the huge data revolution that the world is witnessing, the specialty of statistics and data analysis has become one of the most sought-after disciplines in the world. Hence, there is a great need in the Palestinian market for specialists who are able to deal with data and to be able to analyze and interpret them in an effective way in order to make the necessary decisions to advice their clients.

The bachelor`s degree of Statistics and Data Analysis at the Faculty of Sciences at the Arab American University is a joint program in corporation with the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics. The cooperation is based on the needs of society for statisticians who have practical skills in statistics and data analysis to serve in governmental and private institutions. Both institutions have placed great importance on developing skills to understand modern information and they have orientated towards modern disciplines in order to keep up with current rapid developments. It was agreed upon by the bureau and the university that they must work together in order to produce the statisticians needed desperately to help the community. The program is expected to provide a solid foundation and practical skills needed in both Statistics and Data Analysis. This program is considered a qualitative addition to the programs offered by the Faculty of Sciences and is the first of its kind in the West Bank.

 

Goals

  • To produce students with the ability to suggest solutions to problems facing the community in various fields.
  • To verify compatibility with modern global trends in the functions of applied statistics in relation to economic fields and computer science, which contributes to increasing the interaction of students of this department with other disciplines.
  • To emphasizes the ‘hands on’ practical skills in order to get graduates with useful skills for their future careers.
  • To meet the need of the Palestinian community for rare specialties, as the program is expected to strengthen the scientific research system and contribute to serving the local community
  • This specialization provides students with job opportunities in the field of applied statistics and data analysis, and leads to the development of students who are able to find appropriate solutions to problems facing the local and international community.

 

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME

The justifications for launching the program lie in the need of the Palestinian community to keep up with the recent developments in the field of scientific research and data analysis. There is a need for statisticians to:

  1. Provide the Palestinian society with statisticians of high experience who will be able to provide distinguished, high-quality information to the community based on skills they have learned from the university and the bureau.
  2. Apply data analysis skills in a wide range of fields.
  3. Provide scientific competence in the field of applied statistics and data analysis in order to strip the community of its obvious lack in the field.
  4. Encourage and increase the students' motivation to learn and analyze for creativity, and to produce competitive specialists in the local, regional, and international community who can cooperate with groups in major companies and institutions.
  5. Provide students with job opportunities in the field of applied statistics and data analysis, and leads to the development of students who are able to find appropriate solutions to problems facing the local and international community.
  6. Provide qualified and able to work specialists ready to work in the different statistics centers across Palestine such as the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, the Ministry of Planning, Labor, Research and Studies Centers, etc.

 

Careers of Graduates

The holders of this degree have many opportunities and will be future workers in the labor market of Palestine in the following possible positions:

  • Work in the Ministry of Education, especially as educators.
  • Work for the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics.
  • Work in banks, companies, and scientific research centers.
  • Work in the field of scientific research.
  • Completion of undergraduate studies to be able to continue on to graduate school.
