Civil Engineering

Overview

The Program of Civil Engineering (CE) is to prepare the student for successful professional practice in the field of Civil Engineering, or further graduate study and research at recognized graduate schools. To support this mission, the focus of the curriculum is on teaching science and engineering education that is relevant to the needs of society and industry. The program of (CE) is to provide students with a well-balanced, high quality education in four areas of Civil Engineering practice: environment, geotechnical, structural and transportation engineering.

Goals

  • Prepare students to become successful professional engineers in the demanding field of civil engineering.
  • Provide students with the fundamental principles of science and engineering in order to cope successfully with the technological challenges of the civil and environmental industry.
  • Develop analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Promote engineering ethics, job responsibility and moral practice.
  • Create awareness of social, environmental and global concerns.
  • Develop skills for effective communication with coworkers, managers, and the public on topics related to the technical concepts, risks, and recommendations.

The specific Goals of the program are to:

  1. Equip students with fundamental knowledge, analytical skills, engineering tools and laboratory experience, in order to cope successfully with the technologically challenging field of civil engineering.
  2. Facilitate learning and training in the field of civil engineering which are directly linked to industry and the latest new technologies.
  3. Provide the theoretical and computational skills necessary for the solution of both theoretical and practical engineering problems in the field of civil engineering.
  4. Provide practical and experimental experience that allows students to directly relate basic and theoretical knowledge.
  5. Prepare students to work alone or in groups in order to provide engineering solutions.
  6. Prepare students to design / implement system and processes towards the solution of engineering problems in the field of civil engineering.
  7. Develop communication skills including the abilities to write technical reports and present their work in front of an audience.
  8. Provide students with the opportunity to develop specialized knowledge and technical competence in their field of expertise in order to become successful professional engineers.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME

Upon successful completion of this program, graduates are expected to:

  • Have in -depth knowledge and understanding of the processes and technologies involved the field of civil engineering.
  • Use mathematics, basic science, and engineering techniques to analyze and solve problems related to civil engineering.
  • Use engineering knowledge and tools to design a structure, a device, or a process that meet specific needs within constrain of social economic, environmental, ethical sustainability, and safety origin.
  • Have in depth knowledge of engineering concepts and technical requirements and constraints associated with civil engineering design.
  • Use available measurement data and computer software to reconstruct and simulate three- dimensional models for various structures under testing and evaluation.
  • Have a good understanding of the economics associated with the design and construction of structures.
  • Communicate effectively with others using oral or written skills.
  • Have a broad knowledge in social science, economics and humanities in order to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a social, economic environmental and political context.

Careers of Graduates

Building construction and land development is one of the major sector of the economy. There is a great deal of construction going on including building constructions and land development. A great emphasis is also focused on green development and the design of environment friendly, sustainable, and ecological building. Processing and management of solid wastes and wastewater treatment constitute additional areas of employment for the graduates.

Specifically, a graduate with a degree in civil engineering may be employed in the following fields:

  1. Building constructions.
  2. Road and highway Construction.
  3. Construction of dams and bridges.
  4. Underground Construction
  5. Restoration of old and traditional buildings.
  6. Construction of ports and coastal protection structures.
  7.  Platform design and Construction.
  8. Research and development.
  9. Education including teaching and research.
  10. Recycling and waste management.
  11. Processing of hazard material.
