Committed to fostering a supportive and transparent environment, the university ensures the protection, ownership, and dissemination of intellectual property (IP) rights. By establishing clear guidelines and procedures, AAUP aims to promote creativity, encourage innovation, and uphold fair and equitable treatment for all stakeholders involved in the development and use of intellectual property.
Policy Statement
AAUP is committed to the following principles and standards regarding intellectual property:
Ownership and Protection:
AAUP recognizes and respects the ownership rights of individuals or entities who create intellectual property.
AAUP complies with all applicable legal frameworks governing intellectual property rights.
AAUP encourages faculty, students, staff, and collaborators to promptly disclose and safeguard their intellectual property through appropriate mechanisms, such as patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets.
University Rights and Responsibilities:
AAUP acknowledges that the university may have certain rights to intellectual property developed by faculty, students, staff, or collaborators in specific circumstances, such as research collaborations, sponsored projects, or when the university provides significant resources or funding.
AAUP clarifies the responsibilities of the university in supporting the protection, management, and commercialization of intellectual property in accordance with applicable laws, policies, and agreements.
Commercialization and Technology Transfer:
AAUP promotes the commercialization and transfer of intellectual property to maximize its societal impact and contribute to economic development.
AAUP establishes mechanisms, such as technology transfer offices or innovation hubs, to support the identification, evaluation, protection, and commercialization of promising intellectual property assets.
Revenue Sharing and Incentives:
AAUP ensures fair and equitable distribution of revenues generated from the commercialization of intellectual property, considering the contributions of the creators and the university.
AAUP provides incentives and support mechanisms, such as royalty-sharing programs or seed funding opportunities, to encourage and reward innovation and entrepreneurship within the university community.
Open Access and Knowledge Sharing:
AAUP encourages the dissemination of intellectual property and knowledge generated within the university through open-access publishing, open educational resources, or other appropriate channels.
AAUP promotes responsible knowledge sharing while respecting confidentiality obligations, commercialization interests, and legal restrictions.
Education and Awareness:
AAUP provides education and training programs to raise awareness of intellectual property rights, responsibilities, and best practices among faculty, students, staff, and collaborators.

Implementation and Compliance
To ensure the successful implementation of this policy, AAUP will:
Designate responsible individuals or offices to oversee the implementation, communication, and monitoring of this policy.
Establish procedures and guidelines to facilitate the disclosure, evaluation, protection, and commercialization of intellectual property.
Provide support and resources for intellectual property management, including patent filing, copyright registration, and licensing negotiations.
Develop agreements and contracts that clearly define the ownership, rights, and responsibilities regarding intellectual property, ensuring compliance with legal and funding obligations.
- Regularly review and update the policy to align with evolving legal and industry standards, as well as the changing needs and aspirations of the university community.
Measures
The following measures (indicators) can be used to assess the utilization of this policy:
Intellectual Property Registrations: Number of patents, copyrights, trademarks, or other intellectual property assets registered or applied for.
Innovation Index: Number of innovative projects, products, or solutions developed as a result of the intellectual property policy.
IP Commercialization and Licensing: Number of intellectual property assets successfully commercialized or licensed to external parties.
IP Training and Awareness: Percentage of faculty, staff, and students participating in intellectual property training programs.
IP Protection: Number of reported cases of intellectual property infringement and the subsequent actions taken.
