In a new step towards developing smart home technology solutions, a team of engineering students from the Arab American University, Yazeed Shalabi and Elena Haddad, presented an innovative project entitled "Developing a Smart Home Management System Using the KNX Protocol."
Their project is an integrated smart home management system based on the KNX protocol, a leading global standard in building automation. The system aims to integrate and centrally and efficiently control various home systems, such as lighting, blinds, air conditioning, and security systems, through a dedicated mobile application or smart panels installed within the home.
The team used ETS software, which specializes in programming KNX devices, to design and configure the core components of the system. They also built a working prototype that simulates the system's real-world operating environment, allowing them to test and refine the concept practically.
The collaboration with MELEMCO was considered one of the most important factors in the project's success. The company provided the necessary technical support in the field of electronic devices and contributed effectively to the design of the electrical panels that seamlessly connect the various system components. This professional collaboration transformed the students' idea into a tangible solution. My work is practically applicable.
The project stands out for its ability to enhance the user experience in smart homes by providing complete and seamless control over various home appliances. This allows users to increase comfort, save energy, and enhance security in advanced and sophisticated ways.
The team hopes this system will be the beginning of significant transformations in home automation in the region, especially with the growing trend towards smart homes and the Internet of Things (IoT). The project also reflects the high level of innovation and technical expertise possessed by students at the Arab American University and highlights the importance of partnerships between universities and industry institutions to develop practical solutions that meet market needs.
