The Mediatisation of Middle East Politics
Supervised by Professor Ilan Pappe, my thesis titled: Media, Communication and Political Engagement: The Mediatisation of the Middle East’s Politics of Ongoing Conflicts. It examined the role played by transnational satellite television in covering the Middle East’s ongoing conflicts. My findings established the fact that pan-Arab satellite TV journalism was central, influential, and intervened in these conflicts, not always mirroring reality. It also highlighted, in a systematic way with supporting evidence, how in rentier states, finance can be influential in generating instrumental satellite TV journalism. This served the ends of political elites, in a way that was powerful enough to exert political and ideological influences on the news message consumers of Arab viewers.

Biography:
Fluent in Arabic and English, and conversant in Hebrew, I am an expert in media and communication, with a special emphasize on the Arab media. I research the interrelationship between media communications, culture, and geopolitics, through the theoretical lens of mediatisation and mediatised conflict. I am also well acquainted with pertinent theoretical paradigms of power control, media control, media attention and influence. My ongoing research focuses on the interplay between media and politics in ongoing ethnic, political and sectarian conflicts prevailing in the Middle East, through the lens of mediatisation theory and mediatised conflict. Key emphasis is on the role played by pan-Arab media, primarily transnational satellite TV news media, and its influence on the Arab public sphere. Further research is on the potential of mediatised politics to contribute to the promoting of political stability in the Middle East as a turbulent region. I primarily teach courses on research methods; Strategic Communication; Media and Communication Theory; Communication and the Arab Public Sphere; Media and Lobbying; Fundamentals of Political Communication. In 2017, I have been granted the Fellowship of ‘Accrediting Staff Professionalism in Research-led Education’ (ASPIRE) in UK for my contribution to the teaching and learning quality in higher education. In 2019, I won the Associate Fellowship of the British Higher Education Academy (HEA) for my work on educational communication and its role in promoting educational excellence in higher education. I advise universities, public sector, businesses, civil society organizations both at regional and global levels; last contract with Middle East Broadcasting Networks, Inc. (MBN), initialed the evaluation of the agency’s adherence to basic standards of journalism, production, content, and technical quality. Notable academic works include; my book (in progress) The Manufacturing of Ruin in Pan-Arab Transnational Satellite TV News Message; The Balfour Declaration Centenary, 2017: A Constructive Retrieval or an Odd Masquerade, at Aljazeera Centre for Studies; The Role of Educational Communication in supporting teaching and learning within Multi-cultural Heterogeneous Classroom, the International Journal for Research in Education & Science (IJRES); A Mediatised Conflict: The Mediatisation of Palestinian Split in Pan-Arab Transnational Satellite TV Journalism, per reviewed and ready for publishing in next issue at The Turkish Journal of Middle East Studies.
