Master in Human Physiology

Overview

The human physiology graduate program prepares students for an advanced career in clinical, biology, or biotechnology settings. This program will fulfill the needs of creative, self-motivated, and determined students to achieve their career goals and ambitions. Through strengthening scientific and professional skills, this program provides a strong foundation for doctoral-level studies in biology, physiology, pharmacology, pathophysiology, or neuroscience.

The mission of the program is to facilitate the development of health and medical professionals with advanced clinical skills, who ask and search for answers to unique scientific questions pertinent to local and global health and medical challenges. Students will develop specific scientific strategies and experimental protocols, to perform original research as they consolidate new knowledge into their developing clinical practice.

Goals

  1. Provide students with a systematic understanding and in-depth knowledge along with new and transferable skills in general physiology, systemic physiology, and integrative physiology, and pathophysiology.
  2. Prepare emerging scientists and clinicians for a research career in human physiology and other biomedical sciences.
  3. Prepare students to develop and grow as university-level educators in human physiology and other biomedical sciences.
  4. Enhance a conceptual understanding that enables students to formulate hypothesis and research methods on up-to-date research topics that are of current and future significance to local and global healthcare issues.
  5. Enable autonomy and originality in building scientific hypothesis to tackle major medical and health related problems, and in planning and implementing research techniques to solve them at a professional or equivalent level.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME

  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and discuss up-to-date scientific discoveries in key domains in cellular and organ system physiology.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive and systematic understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of the approaches required in advancing medical knowledge and understanding of the processes and biological mechanisms.
  • Identify and access appropriate scientific resources, synthesize existing knowledge, and critically appraise and criticize published findings.
  • Conduct independent work in a biomedical research laboratory, through demonstrating skilled use of techniques, tools, and protocols in the biomedical research field.
  • Communicate scientific results to audience through giving spoken and written presentations of scientific topics and research results.
  • Present hypotheses and select, adapt, and conduct molecular and cell-based experiments to confirm or reject the hypotheses.
  • Demonstrate responsible, cooperative, professional, and ethical behavior while working with other colleagues towards a common scientific goal.
  • Prepare for a professional career biomedical or biotechnological domain, or graduate PhD focused scientific research career.

Career Opportunities

Students holding jobs in a diversity of clinical and health related fields including medicine, pharmacy, critical care nursing, laboratory technicians, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy can benefit from the solid knowledge in human system physiology. Gathered research skills will help Human Physiology MSc graduates in tackling the major health challenges encountered in daily and routine clinical practice to scientifically investigate the medical dilemmas encountered, probably achieving the delivery of innovative, evidence-based medical solutions. This will enhance research capacity at several governmental, public, and private health institutions in Palestine, and will help graduates in holding important positions in their institutional research units.

During the human physiology master, enrolled students will take an active role in the program. They will organize and participate in regular meetings, where they informally discuss their research and invite partners from different academic institutions, consultancy companies, hospitals, clinical centers in the community, and patient support groups. Students also will give oral and poster presentations, at national and international meetings, which in most cases include networking events. Additionally, they will work on joint research projects that include outstanding local and international collaborators based in the UK, France, and abroad. This will help students to gain insights on various career options, opening avenues to find top science Ph.D. opportunities.
