Policy Statement

AAUP is dedicated to the following principles and standards of good governance and ethical conduct:

  1. Transparency and Accountability:

    • AAUP promotes transparency in decision-making processes by providing access to relevant information, policies, and procedures to stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff, and the public.

    • AAUP holds ourselves accountable for our actions and decisions, the University strives to act in the best interest of the university community and its stakeholders.

 

  1. Integrity and Ethical Behavior:

    • AAUP upholds the highest standards of integrity and ethical behavior, adhering to applicable laws, regulations, and professional codes of conduct.

    • AAUP fosters a culture that encourages ethical decision-making, honesty, fairness, and the avoidance of conflicts of interest.

 

  1. Governing Councils and Bodies:

    • AAUP ensures that the governing bodies of the university, fulfill its fiduciary duties and responsibilities, including strategic planning, policy development, financial oversight, and evaluation of executive leadership.

    • AAUP supports its governing bodies in its commitment to the long-term sustainability and success of the university.

 

  1. Leadership and Management:

    • AAUP expects university leaders and administrators to demonstrate effective leadership, sound management practices, and a commitment to the principles of good governance.

    • AAUP promotes professional development opportunities for leaders to enhance their knowledge and skills in governance and ethical leadership.

 

  1. Stakeholder Engagement:

    • AAUP engages with stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the wider community, to ensure their voices are heard, their concerns are addressed, and their perspectives are considered in decision-making processes.

    • AAUP fosters open lines of communication and collaboration with stakeholders to build trust, promote inclusivity, and facilitate shared decision-making.

 

  1. Risk Management and Internal Controls:

    • AAUP establishes robust risk management processes and internal controls to identify, assess, mitigate, and monitor risks that may impact the university's operations, reputation, or compliance with laws and regulations.

    • AAUP regularly reviews and updates risk management strategies and internal control mechanisms to adapt to changing circumstances and emerging risks.

 

  1. Compliance and Legal Framework:

    • AAUP adheres to applicable laws, regulations, and contractual obligations, maintaining compliance with statutory requirements, accreditation standards, and funding agency guidelines.

    • AAUP establishes policies and procedures to ensure ongoing compliance and mitigate legal and regulatory risks.

Implementation and Compliance

To ensure the successful implementation of this policy, AAUP will:

  1. Delineate the roles and responsibilities of each level of management to effectively oversee the implementation, communication, and monitoring of this policy within their respective domains.
     

  2. Develop and disseminate guidelines, procedures, and training programs that promote good governance principles and ethical conduct.
     

  3. Regularly review and update governance structures, policies, and practices to align with evolving best practices and changing legal and regulatory requirements.
     

  4. Conduct periodic assessments and audits to evaluate compliance with this policy and address any identified gaps or areas for improvement.
     

  5. Provide training and resources to educate university leaders, administrators, and stakeholders on the principles of good governance and ethical behavior.

Measures

The following measures (indicators) can be used to assess the utilization of this policy:

  1. Policy Awareness and Communication (awareness levels, and activities to promote good governance practices).
     

  2. Percentage of university departments or units that have developed/reviewed their procedures to be aligned with the policy's principles.
     

  3. The number of reported incidents related to ethical violations or governance issues.
