Overview

The Cybersecurity Engineering program at The Arab American University in Palestine is closely related to the Computer Engineering program, integrating fundamental and advanced concepts from both fields to prepare graduates for the evolving challenges in the tech industry. The program aims to prepare graduates for professional participation in multi-disciplinary fields in both industry and academia, focusing on cybersecurity. Graduates are expected to produce innovative and entrepreneurial solutions to meet national and international cybersecurity needs, demonstrate ethical and collaborative leadership, and continually develop their knowledge and expertise through professional opportunities and life-long learning.

The program equips students with the ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex cybersecurity problems, apply secure engineering design principles, communicate effectively with diverse audiences, and function effectively in team environments. Graduates are trained to handle ethical and professional responsibilities, conduct and analyze experimentation, and continuously acquire new knowledge in the field. The program also emphasizes the importance of understanding theoretical foundations, developing secure software and hardware systems, managing cyber threats and incident responses, and integrating artificial intelligence in cybersecurity practices.

Graduates of Cybersecurity Engineering have the ability to work in a variety of roles related to cybersecurity and information technology. These roles include:

  • Cybersecurity Engineer:
    Specializing in designing and developing security solutions to protect networks and systems.
  • Security Analyst:
    Evaluating systems and networks to detect vulnerabilities and providing recommendations for improvement.
  • Information Security Manager:
    Overseeing cybersecurity strategies and policies within an organization.
  • Incident Response Specialist:
    Working on investigating and responding to security threats and breaches.
  • Security Consultant:
    Providing security consulting and guidance to companies and organizations.
  • Penetration Tester:
    Conducting simulated attacks to evaluate vulnerabilities in systems and applications.
  • Secure Application Developer:
    Focusing on writing secure code and developing applications with security standards in mind.
  • Network Security Engineer:
    Designing and maintaining secure network infrastructures.
  • Cybersecurity Hardware Systems Designer:
    Designing hardware systems specifically aimed at enhancing cybersecurity using technologies like CPLD and FPGA.
  • Industrial Networks Security Expert:
    Specializing in securing industrial network infrastructures and ensuring the integrity of industrial control systems.
  • Cybercrime Investigator:
    Working with legal entities to analyze digital evidence and solve.

Complex Problem Solving and Theoretical Foundations

  • An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex cybersecurity engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
  • Recognize the theoretical foundations of electrical engineering and computer engineering with an advanced focus on cybersecurity aspects.

Engineering Design and Security Systems

  • An ability to apply engineering design to produce secure solutions that meet specified needs, considering public health, safety, welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
  • The ability to design different security systems in software, computer networks, and cloud computing, along with building, managing, and dealing with various risks associated with these systems.

Effective Communication and Teamwork

  • An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences about cybersecurity issues and solutions.
  • An ability to function effectively on a team, providing leadership, creating a collaborative and inclusive environment, establishing goals, planning tasks, and meeting objectives in cybersecurity projects.

Ethics and Professional Responsibility

An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in cybersecurity situations and make informed judgments considering the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.

Experimentation, Data Analysis, and Algorithms

  • An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions in cybersecurity contexts.
  • Understand various algorithms in cybersecurity and how to build different hardware systems aimed at this purpose.

Handling Cyber Threats and Incident Response Management

  • Equip students with the knowledge and skills to handle breaches, including inspection, reconnaissance, and building effective systems to manage various threats.
  • The ability to build and manage effective response systems in various cybersecurity fields, covering all stages from threat and vulnerability hunting to providing effective response plans that ensure business continuity.

The ability to develop governance, management, and auditing systems in cybersecurity according to global standards and guidelines.
