Overview

Despite of the invaluable contributions of respiratory therapists in the management of respiratory conditions in hospital and outpatient settings, respiratory therapy academic programs are considered severely deficient worldwide. In Palestine respiratory therapy programs do not exist at any schools which jeopardize the efficient care of clients with pulmonary diseases and conditions. Typically, physicians take the care of patients with intermediate and critical respiratory conditions, and leave nurses to take the care of these patients without adequate knowledge and skills.

Respiratory Bachelor programs are expected to prepare practitioners capable to provide diagnostic, therapy and rehabilitation services for clients with cardio-pulmonary disorders. Graduates of the program are usually employed at various health care settings to include hospitals, pulmonary physician's offices, home care, medical equipment companies, and diagnostic laboratories.

Many Palestinians health administrators and institutions have fully praised the establishment of this program including the Minster of Health. The Arab American University is proposing the establishment of a bachelor of science program in respiratory therapy to fill the gap in the high need for this specialty.

The Arab American University will deliver an exemplary Respiratory Therapy program with outstanding academic and clinical training capable to produce effective respiratory therapists to meet the Palestinian community needs.

Goals

Promote scientific research, among student of the program to provide evidence practices in the respiratory therapy field.
Prepare respiratory therapy students with fundamental as well as advanced knowledge and skills necessary to practice effectively in all health settings.
Equip graduates of the refractory therapy program with quality education and ethical leadership skills to provide safe and competent care.
Develop disease prevention, and health promotion strategies in the community.
Deliver professional and compassionate respiratory therapy care for the patient and family in need.

Career of Graduates

Graduates of this program are expected to be qualified to work in different fields such as:

Intensive care units for adults, infants, or newborns.
Various patient admission departments including emergency rooms.
Respiratory Laboratories such as pulmonary function lab, and hyprerbaremic labs, and pulmonary clinics.
Nursing homes and home care for the elderly people with chronic diseases.
Education and administration.
Privately owned business

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, students should be equipped with comprehensive knowledge, skills, and abilities to excel in their endeavors.

Integrated Respiratory Knowledge

Integrate human anatomy, physiology, pathology and pharmacological knowledge in the care of clients with respiratory abnormalities.

Foundations of Clinical Practice

Use basic sciences as a foundation for understanding the clinical examination, intervention and prognosis in the field of respiratory therapy.

Patient Assessment

Perform comprehensive assessment of normal and critically ill adults and pediatric clients with potential respiratory difficulties.

Diagnostics & Monitoring

Provide accurate diagnostic testing procedures, monitoring, and interpret results in order to provide competent care.

Respiratory Care Planning

Develop an appropriate respiratory care plans for clients with poor oxygenation and ventilation disorders.

Therapeutic Interventions

Demonstrate effective interventions in the care of patients with respiratory diseases.

Clinical Procedures & Safety

Identify indications, contraindications, complications and related-hazards for different diagnostic, therapeutic and ancillary ‎procedures used in the field of respiratory therapy.

Ethics, Leadership & Teamwork

Apply ethical standards of care, research and evidenced based care with distinguished leadership, team work and communication skills.
