The Conflict Studies Research Center at the Arab American University concluded the events of the second international summer school for 2024, which it held in cooperation with The New School American University in the Jordanian capital, Amman.
The summer school brought together students of various nationalities to benefit from a rich academic and cultural experience. The program took place between June 20th and August 4th of this year.
The program included many topics, most notably, "Studying and Shaping Social Space Without Colonialism", which focused on analyzing complex systems and the culture of control in the context of settler colonialism, and the topic of "Politics of Exile", which in turn dealt with analyzing the concept of exile and its impact, and reviewed experiences and perceptions related to forced displacement and migration.
The program also included field visits to a number of important sites in Jordan with the aim of enhancing students' understanding of the academic theories discussed and linking them to practical applications. The tours included a visit to the city of Salt, during which students explored the social relations and networks between Palestine and its neighboring countries. Students also visited the Dead Sea and Ma’daba areas to study religious discourse and how it affected the conflict in the region. In the south, students visited the Aqaba and Wadi Ram areas to study the impact of regional policies on local policies.
Students expressed their happiness to have this experience, which gave them a deeper understanding of the topics covered in the lectures, and provided them with a valuable opportunity to combine theoretical knowledge with practical application, which helped them understand the complex contexts in the Middle East in a better way.
