Research Involving Humans and Animals
The AAUP Journal of STEM and Health Sciences (JSH-AAUP) adheres to the highest international ethical standards in research involving human participants and animals.
Human Subjects
- All research involving human participants must comply with the Declaration of Helsinki and relevant national/institutional ethical standards.
- Authors must state in the manuscript that approval was obtained from an Institutional Review Board (IRB) or Ethics Committee, including the name of the committee and approval/reference number.
- Informed consent must be obtained from all participants, and this must be clearly stated in the manuscript.
- For studies involving vulnerable populations (e.g., children, patients), additional safeguards must be documented.
- For case reports, authors must obtain written consent for publication from the individual (or legal guardian).
Animal Studies
- All research involving animals must comply with recognized guidelines, such as the ARRIVE guidelines and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
- Manuscripts must state that approval was obtained from an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) or equivalent body.
- The manuscript must include a statement describing the welfare and humane treatment of the animals.
- Studies that cause unnecessary harm or distress to animals will not be considered.
Ethics Statements in Manuscripts
All manuscripts reporting human or animal research must include a separate Ethics Statement within the Methods section, specifying:
- The approving body (IRB, Ethics Committee, or IACUC).
- The approval/reference number.
- A statement on informed consent (for humans).
- A statement on humane treatment (for animals).
Failure to provide sufficient ethical approval documentation will result in rejection of the manuscript.
