University Concludes a Course on Women Rights

Arab American University’s Center of Continuing Education in partnership with Law Faculty concluded a training course entitled “Women Rights, Human Rights”, organized annually by Women’s Center for Legal Aid and Counselling.

The 4 days training with 18 participating students included a series of lectures, practical exercises and watching documentaries on gender concept, violence against women, international legitimacy for Human Rights, Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women, Palestinian Penal Code, civil status records and the "CEDAW covenant" laws failure to protect domestic violence victims.

The training presented by specialized lawyer in international law and women rights in Women’s Center for Legal Aid and Counseling Miss Rowan Obaid. She pointed that she’s part of the awareness program implemented by the Center in collaboration with Palestinian universities entitled "Women's Rights, Human Rights", aiming generally to raise students' awareness of women issues in general, discrimination against them especially in regulations and laws. Noting that this program is part of a campaign for the women’s center with a number of partner institutions "Yes to life, No to violence" in order to adopt modern Palestinian penal code to be fairer with more equality for women.

Training supervisor in the university’s Center of Continuous Education Miss Shatha Al-Ahmad said, this training aims to educate youths and raise their awareness on societies stereotype and dominant concepts that violates Islamic law, which oppress women and their rights of education, health as well as to set respect principles for human rights, strengthen equality and justice to eliminate discrimination, in addition to select focus group capable of defending women rights at locally and internationally to reformulation thoughts and community behavioral trends to make a change and human development.
