Analyzing the Content of the Palestinian Mathematics Textbooks for the Third, Fourth and Fifth Grades in the Light of the Content Area of Geometry and Measurement Standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM)

Abstract: 

This study aimed at determining the availability of content standards set by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), in the content areas of Geometry and Measurement, in the content of Palestinian mathematics books for the third, fourth, and fifth grades. The researcher used the analytical descriptive method for its suitability for study purposes. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher prepared the study tool and used it as a reference in the content analysis of the Palestinian mathematics books for the basic grades (3-5) applied in 2018-2019, consisting of six books with two parts for each class. After determining the validity and reliability of the tool and conducting the appropriate statistical treatment, the results of the study showed that the content of the Palestinian mathematics books for grades(3-5)  complies with Geometry and Measurement standards set out by the (NCTM) in varying degrees. The study recommends reviewing the Palestinian schools’ mathematics textbooks for the basic grades (3-5). The researchers suggest conducting further studies to determine the availability of (NCTM) content standards of Geometry and Measurement in the schools’ mathematics textbooks for the other grades.
