AAUP Holds a Workshop on Ways of Using Electronic Information in Pharmacy Management

Thursday, June 8, 2023

The Faculty of Pharmacy at the Arab American University held a workshop on using electronic information systems in the management of pharmacies, and how to use automatic dispensing machines in pharmacies. In this workshop, the University hosted Dr. Majdi Al-Shaarawy, General Manager of Novatech Medical Technology, with the presence of the Faculty’s academic staff and students.

The workshop aims to introduce the attendees to technological development and its importance in the pharmaceutical sector in improving the effectiveness of pharmacy work, patient safety, cost reduction, and medical malpractice.

The workshop was inaugurated by the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Dr. Hatem Hijaz, with a speech in which he welcomed the guests and attendees. Dr. Hijaz explained that in light of the technical acceleration in all fields that the world around us is witnessing, digital transformation has become a necessity in the management of pharmacies, and it is important for every pharmacist to master it and use it in the management of pharmacies. He added that the pharmacy information system helps to improve the health care of the patient by giving alerts in case the doctor prescribes drugs that have negative chemical reactions, or if the patient suffers from an allergy when taking certain drugs based on the pre-stored patient data.

For his part, Dr. Majdi Al-Shaarawy presented a detailed explanation about the use of the electronic systems of managing pharmacies, pointing out that this system has many advantages, most notably the registration of incoming and outgoing medicine, sales and demands, and the expiry dates of medicines. Dr. Majdi also mentioned the scientific aspects of this system, such as drug overlaps and errors, easy inventory of medicines, data storage, processing, retrieval and analysis, in addition to the management of various logistic, human and financial resources.

Dr. Majdi explained that the use of this system helps enter an unlimited number of medicines and medical supplies, and to collect their commercial and scientific data. The system can add new items or modify the previously entered, and makes it possible to know the medicine available at the pharmacy and the amount spent. This all can be done through the (Barcode) system.

Dr. Al-Shaarawi announced that his company will donate electronic information systems for pharmacy management to the virtual pharmacy of the AAUP Faculty of Pharmacy, so that the Faculty students can train and master them to be ready for the labor market.
