Tuesday, April 16, 2024

Researcher Arifa Misbah Abu Karsh, a student in the master’s program in adult nursing, has defended her thesis titled “Effectiveness of Structured Education on Patient’s Knowledge and Practice Regarding Colostomy in West Bank.”

This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of a structured educational program on patient knowledge and practice regarding colostomy care in the West Bank. The researcher used a quasi-experimental study design (pre-test and post-test) to achieve the objectives of the study. The sample consisted of 37 adult male and female patients, who had a colostomy operation, as a non-probability convenience sample for this study. The samples were taken in surgical and medical outpatient clinics and oncology clinics in governmental and private hospitals in the West Bank. The researcher employed a questionnaire to assess the patients’ knowledge and practice regarding colostomy care.

The study concluded that there was a statistically significant difference between the total knowledge scores and the total practice scores for the participants before and after implementing the structured education program. Moreover, the structured patient education is a useful tool for improving patients’ understanding of and adherence to colostomy care practices.

The thesis was supervised by Dr. Rabhi Bsharat. The committee of examiners included Dr. Moataz Draidi and Dr. Imad Abu Khader.
