67 New Cases of the “Indian” Strain of COVID Discovered by AAUP and the Ministry of Health

According to the studies of the samples done by AAUP laboratories under collaboration with the Ministry of Health that ensured the discovery of the delta strains of corona in Palestine, the Ministry of Health sent new samples to Arab American University laboratories in Ramallah. AAUP team done the needed tests and discovered that there are new 67 cases infected with the Indian strain “Delta sub-strain B.1.617.2” and “3 samples have the British Alpha strain B.1.1.7”

Due to the biological importance of the new samples, AAUP laboratories will follow up the strains in order to try to discover some of the sub strains that were also discovered globally.

AAUP Laboratories and under Collaboration with the Ministry of Health Discover New Cases of the COVID Strain in Palestine

According to the results of the tests that ensured the discovery of new strains of corona in Palestine, the Ministry of Health sent new 27 samples to Arab American University laboratories in Ramallah as the Ministry suspected that those samples might be infected with the new strain. AAUP team done the needed tests and discovered that 24 out of 27 of the samples are infected with the new Indian strain “Delta sub-strain B.1.617.2” and “2 samples have the British strain B.1.1.7”, while one sample has the “South-African strain B.1.351”.

AAUP stated that the information related to the genetic factors of the virus is the main indicator to the spread of the virus in Palestine. And so, Arab American University emphasizes on the importance of the researches that observe the developments and genetic mutations of the virus.

In its research studies, AAUP continues to follow up the samples of the infected people who tested positive, and the development related to vaccination as well.

The work in the research laboratories in Arab American University

Arab American University received an approval from Ministry of Health to start using its laboratories for COVID-19 tests. Ms. May Alkaila- the Minister of Health wrote that this approval was based on the fact that the university has an efficient team to do the tests, and that this will contributes in controlling the infected cases. The minister ensured that the ministry will start transferring some of the cases to AAUP laboratories in case if the pandemic got any worse.

Prof. Ali Zeidan Abu Zuhri- the University President said that the accreditation from the Palestinian Ministry of Health for the AAUP laboratories in Ramallah to start doing the COVID-19 tests came after the ministry ensured that all the scientific developed medical devices are available, in addition to the efficient and professional team to deal with patients.

AAUP Medical Center -Ramallah Campus, sings a cooperation agreement with PALTEL “Jawwal” to provide medical services and laboratory tests to all PALTEL employees and their families in the center.

Prof. Ali Zeidan Abu Zuhri- the University President and Mr. Abdul Majeed Melhem- the General Manager of PALTEL “Jawwal” signed the agreement with the presence of Eng. Bara Asfour- the Assistant to the President, Dr. Jumana Jaradat- the Executive Manager of the Medical Center, Prof. Hisham Darwish, Mr. Khalid Herzallah along with staff and managers from PALTEL.

AAUP - Ramallah Campus

At Al-Rihan Neighborhood, on the other side of Al-Istishari Arab Hospital, on a hill lies the premises of Arab American University as a monument for a free Palestine, not just for a free State of Palestine. But, yet for an independent academic & knowledge future that AAUP nurtures along with its Palestinian universities. 

The situation is not about architecture, but about the soul that lives in this monument of humanity, and national morals, here you can perceive the Palestinian willingness to develop and build all it takes to rise with a free Palestinian future, as I sight in the eyes who welcomed me while I was going for a dental medical check.

Part of the Visit

The University welcomed a delegation from University of Exeter UK from the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Peter Turnbini and Dr. Emma Babil who visited the university to discuss ways of cooperation in medical research fields.

The Vice President for International Relations Dr. Dalal Irekat, welcomed the guest and pointed out the university's vision in bulling international cooperation with other universities to exchange academic and research experiences to enrich the university’s students and faculty members.

The Minister of Health Dr. Jawad Awad announced that Arab American University has received accreditation of two Dental Residency Programs in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Prosthodontics, after its recognition by the Palestinian Medical Council. As he praised the efforts of the university, saying that this recognition is a pioneer in the academic development, especially in the disciplines and the medical fields.

This special announced was during his speech at the opening ceremony of the Medical Center, that contains (the Dental Center, the Genetic Genetics Center and the Analysis Lab) at Arab American University - Ramallah campus in the presence of Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University Dr. Mohamed Ashtia, Dr. Yousef Asfour Chairman of the Board of Directors, the Governor of Ramallah and Al-Bireh Dr. Laila Ghannam, President of the University Professor Ali Zidan Abu Zuhri, Assistant Undersecretary for Higher Education at the Ministry of Education Dr.

The Secretary General of the Jordanian Medical Council visits Arab American University campus in Ramallah

Dr. Nidal Younis Secretary-General of the Jordanian Medical Council, visited Arab American University campus in Ramallah and was introduced to its academic programs in Bachelors, Masters, and PhD degrees. He was accompanied by the Secretary General of the Palestinian Medical Council Dr. Amin Thalji, Dr. Mohammed Loay, and former Secretary General of the Palestinian Medical Council Dr. Sulaiman Barqawi.

The guests were welcomed by Dr. Imad Abdul Khaliq the Director of Orthodontic Programs at Arab American University, Dr. Jumana Jaradat Director of the Educational Dental Center, Mr. Khalid Harazallah Director of the Medical Center Laboratories at the University.

The visit of Dr. Khayriah Rasas Advisor to the Prime Minister to the University

She praised the university and its distinguished academic role

The Advisor to the Prime Minister Dr. Khayriah Rasas visited Arab American University in Ramallah campus, where the chairman of boards of directors Dr. Yusuf Asfour, welcomed her along with the University President Prof. Ali Zidan Abu Zuhri, and the Academic Advisor Prof. Walid Dieb, and Head of Administrative and Financial Affairs Mr. Faleh Abu Orah, and the Manger of Medical Center Dr. Jumana Jaradat.

During her visit, Prof. Abu Zuhri gave a detailed presentation to the Prime Minister's Advisor about the University's goals, its vision of higher education and its academic programs in the PhD, MA and BA.
