The Molecular Genetics and Genetic Toxicology laboratories in AAUP

Trying to discover the genetic mutations for COVID-19 in Palestine

Under supervision of Academic staff from AAUP, AAUP Masters’ students of the Molecular Genetics and Genetic Toxicology Program and experts from the Ministry of Health, Arab American University in partnership with the Palestinian Ministry of Health launched a research project to study the genetic sequencing for COVID-19 between the Palestinian patients.

This research will provide new visions about the factors behind the development of the virus and how to follow-up the changes in the virus in our country. In addition, this research will provide answers to many questions about the virus that will help specialists and the authority to determine future mechanisms to deal with the virus and help to contain it in Palestine.

AAUP donation of 200 kits of medical and preventive supplies to the Palestinian Ministry of Health to help in facing COVID-19

Celebrating its 20th year, Arab American University will be pleased to share its success story and rapid response during the Corona pandemic and how it started the e-learning at the beginning of the Spring Semester that started due to the case of emergency caused by the spread of COVID-19.

Before going in depth in this successful and positive experiment, and how Arab American University has managed to switch to the e-learning since the beginning of the spread of COVID-19, it is important to mention that AAUP was established in 2000 and it is an emerging Palestinian university that managed to keep up with the latest and most current scientific and research development during the last 20 years just like the best universities around the world.

The COVENT Ventilator

Directed by Dr. Yousef Asfour- the Head of the Board of Directors, Arab American University contributed in supporting the “COVENT Ventilator” project that is considered to be the first of its kind in Palestine.

This device is used for emergency cases only and has safety features that guarantee safe ventilation process with no complications. It is an electromechanical device with electromechanical parts, and the main part of it is the DC Motor that is connected to the device through an Oxygen Intake Cylinder Module that helps in the vital breathing process of inspiration and expiration.

Speakers in Online Seminar through ZOOM about " Sports Investment during and after Corona "

Under the auspices of Major General Jibril Rajoub, and with collaboration between Arab Federation for Sports Culture and the Palestinian Olympic Committee, Arab American University hosted an online seminar through Zoom entitled “Sports Investment during and after Corona”

Prof. Sa’d Shalbi – the Sports Economics Professor in Mansoura University and the Adviser for President of Jeddah University and Al Ahli Club for Marketing, was part of this online seminar and talked about the basics of marketing and investment in the Arab World especially for the Palestinian case that he considered as a model for success due to the high use of technology in Palestine especially by the youth. Part of the practical training for the Students of the Faculty of Sport Sciences

The Faculty of Sport Science in Arab American University resumed the practical trainings for its students for spring semester 2019/2020 courses, taking in consideration all safety precaution procedures and social distancing that was determined by the Ministry of Health, especially after changing the educational process to be all through e-learning after the spread of Coronavirus.

The faculty began with the practical training for courses like football, swimming, athletics, basketball, gymnastics and other practices and trainings.

A study by Arab American University: 93% Confidence that Palestine will be able to Win its Battle against the Coronavirus

In a recent survey study done by the Arab American University on a random sample of 1700 Palestinian of 18 years old and older who were randomly selected and contacted through the phone between April 19th, 2020 and May 1st, 2020, information were collected for a survey on the knowledge and practices concerning the Coronavirus in the West Bank and Gaza. This study that was supervised by Dr.

Study results showed that 88% of the sample (85% in the West Bank and 92% in Gaza) thinks that currently there is no available effective treatment for COVID-19, and 41% of the sample thinks that the warm weather will stop the spread of the disease. Whereas 89% of the sample (92% females and 86% males) thought that this disease is now under control.

About the confidence of people that Palestine can and will win the battle against COVID-19, the study showed that 93% (91% in the WB and 96% in Gaza) trust that Palestine will win.

Part of the safety precautions that were applied in AAUP

The Administration of Arab American University has emphasized that they took all the precautions since day one of the emergency after the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) to establish a safe environment for employees and students, following the instructions of the Palestinian Ministry of Health that were announced concerning the safety of the Palestinian universities.

Prof. Abu Zuhri said: “Following the instructions announced by the Prime Minister Dr. Mohammad Ishtayyeh that were directed by President Mahmoud Abbas- President of the State of Palestine, AAUP has managed to complete the emergency period successfully, wisely and with great responsibility.

Irish representative to Palestine, the British political Consul and Belfast Civil Society expert join AAUP Online workshop on Northern Ireland Peace Process.

Online workshop via Zoom on Northern Ireland for the Conflict Resolution MA program. Dr Dalal Iriqat held an online workshop on the Peace Process of Northern Ireland that led to the Good Friday agreement, the workshop presented the Irish- British and Northern Irish perspectives.

Dr Christopher Sistrunk joined the Research Methods course meeting via zoom

During the research methods course offered to students at the Molecular genetics and gene toxicology Master‘s program, Dr Nouar Qutob had a guest speaker joining via zoom, Dr Christopher Sistrunk, who talked to the students about graduate research admissions, phd applications and research using real life examples. The Lecture had high student engagement with fruitful discussions. 

Dr Christopher Sistrunk is an Assistant Professor in the division of Health Equities and the division of Biomarkers of Early Detection and Prevention within the department of Population Sciences at City of Hope, USA. Dr. Sistrunk plays an important role in the overall mission of City of Hope as a leading NIH-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Sistrunk serves as an enterprise-wide leader in administration, education, research, and community relations.
